Q: How long does the review process take?
A: Novels should be submitted as a query including the first three chapters and a synopsis to novels@severedpress.com if we are interested in your work we will request the full manuscript within 21 days.
Q: What is the review process?
A: Severed Press will evaluate your work for entertainment literary quality and commercial appeal. Once our review process is complete we will either make you an offer to publish, decline to publish or request that changes be made and the work resubmitted.
Q: My book isn't finished yet. Can I still submit it?
A: Yes, Queries consisting of synopsis/outline/etc will be responded to.
Q: Will I receive any feedback?
A: Severed Press will only give feedback on works we are interested in publishing
Q: What royalties do Severed Press pay?
A: Royalties are paid on every sale with the exception of as author copies. Royalties are paid on a quarterly basis within 90 days of the end of each calendar quarter. Books are not considered sold, and royalties will not be paid until payment is actually received by Severed Press. Specific royalty percentages will be discussed if Severed Press books make an offer to publish your book.
Q: Do I have to pay for set up fees for getting my book published?
A: Severed Press are not a vanity press we do not charge our authors any fees whatsoever with the exception of author copies.
Q: What is my author's discount? Can I buy more copies of my book?
A: Authors may purchase any quantities of their books for a standard author discount of 40% off cover price. Royalties will not be paid on any books sold to the author at the author's discount. The Author may freely sell or give away any books that they purchase.
Authors pay shipping and handling charges for all copies purchased.
Q: What will my book's layout be?
A: Books are generally 6x9 paperbacks.
Q: Who gets my book cover designed?
A: Severed Press will arrange to have your cover designed but do take author input.
Q: will my book be edited?
A: Yes, your book be edited/proof read, in a lot of cases this will be simply spelling and grammatical errors. Severed Press will never make major changes without the author's approval.
Q: Where will my book be available?
Using the distribution channel of Ingram books (one of the worlds largest wholesalers, your book will be available to all Ingram customers - over 30,000 wholesalers, retailers and booksellers in over 100 countries these include Amazon US/UK Barnes & Noble Baker and Taylor, Coutes the Library supplier and many, many more. Furthermore we guarantee your book will be available on Amazon.com. On release your book will also be placed in Ingram’s advance catalog. Severed Press will also promote your book locally in Australia.
Q: What are my obligations as an author?
The author has really only one obligation: to provide us with the completed final-version manuscript. After the book has gone through the editing process it is set up in type and then forwarded as a page proof to the author for final, minor correction. The author is expected to return such corrections within 10 working days. Once we feel that all necessary elements are in place, we will begin to market and distribute your book.
As the author of the book it is to your benefit to get your book out there as much as possible. Tell your friends speak to local bookstores; arrange book signings send your book to reviewers. The more you get your book out there the more you will sell
Q: Will my book have an ISBN number?
A: Severed Press will purchase an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) specifically for your book. An ISBN is required to track and order your books.
Q: How much is the retail price of my book?
A: Severed Press will set the retail price of your book to be competitive and the price is dependent on the book size, page count, and story content.
Q: Once I've published my book with Severed Press, who owns the rights?
A: You retain ownership of the book rights. However, during the contract period, you have licensed your sales rights exclusively to us and you do not have the right to sell your book unless specifically permitted by Severed Press.
As part of the publishing contract you grant Severed Press the right to print, distribute, promote, and sell your book for a specific length of time, which can be extended
Q: Does Severed Press copyright my book for me?
A: When you wrote your book, you automatically asserted copyright ownership.
Q: Can I still publish my book elsewhere?
A: No. You are granting the exclusive world wide rights for Severed Press to print, distribute, and sell your books for you. After the initial publishing contract ends, you may continue with Severed Press by mutual agreement
Q: What happens if another agent or editor wants to publish my book?
A: Once the initial period of your publishing contract ends, you are free to enter into any other agreements at any time. Publishers may offer a quit claim buy-out to Severed Press to receive the rights to your work. Severed Press will consider any such offer and always try to achieve the maximum benefit for our authors and our business interests.
